Levenwick, like all of Shetland, is rich in the remains of our
past. Near to Mucklehus, the mounded cemetery is early
Christian, situated
in a typical Norse location at the end of a sandy beach. About
a mile south of Netherton, on the rocky coastline, is Levenwick
Broch, one of Shetland’s many such structures dating from
about 2000 years ago. The south mainland also offers internationally
important archeological sites such as Mousa Broch, Jarlshof and
Old Scatness, which is a live excavation open to the public.
More recent history is in evidence at the Shetland Croft Museum,
Quendale
Mill, Leebitton Boat Shed and the Hoswick Visitor Centre, which
are all within a 15 minute drive of Mucklehus.
